There came a time when the need for a separate space
devoted to double bass became apparent in the Doak domain.
The instruments were inhabiting all corners, and the majority of the floor
space in our home. Though the presence of a double bass is a blessing,
day to day navigation had
become a precarious chore amidst the growing sea, and low ceilings prevented
all but the vertically challenged from indulging them in play. Contractor/bassist
Joe Banks led the church raising, and with the help of students and friends,
we created a structure of bass splendor. Salvaged
materials of lumber, cedar, granite & marble combined to create a space
with 20 foot vaulted ceilings, antique stained glass windows, a serene
meditation loft, and a fabulous view of the Doak koi pond & garden.
So the basses come, some broken and beaten, for restoration at the hands of
gentle luthiers, to fill our lives with the wonders of their depth.
