The pitch is controlled by pulling on the hoe handle to change the string tension while your right foot rests on the edge of the tub to stabilize it. It has a fat percussive thump, and offers many of other sound effect possibilities, including slapping or snapping the string, or using the handle or tub as a percussion instrument.
